tungsten rings, lord of rings

“One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them”

An epic in itself The Lord of the Rings is a super novel crafted within a fantasy world by author J. R. R. Tolkien. What started as a sequel to his, another, very famous fantasy novel – ‘The Hobbit’ eventually took on a much greater form; where a series of three adventure films directed by Peter Jackson were created based on Tolkien’s work. This trilogy named ‘The Lord of the Rings’ was subtitled as – ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ (It came out in 2001), ‘The Two Towers’ (Released in 2002) and ‘The Return of the King’ (It released in 2003).

Predominantly written in phases during the Second World War (1937 – 1949); the novel sold over 150 million copies. The movies, which were made simultaneously, took over eight years in the making and are one of the most expansive and expensive film projects ever. With a budget that went well over $ 281 million, these films upon release were heavy grossers bagging critical acclaims and many awards.

Published in three volumes from 1954-55, the story of the book, as well as, the subsequent movies revolves around, the Dark Lord Sauron; who is the main antagonist and also the one who created the ‘One Ring’. This ring had the power to rule the rest of the eight ‘Rings of Power’ and was that supreme weapon in his arsenal that he created to help him conquer the Middle-Earth and rule it forever.

The One Ring

The story revolves around the war of these rings as seen by the hobbits Frodo Baggins, Samwise “Sam” Gamgee, Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck and Peregrin “Pippin” Took; their allies and the many companions. However, the actual story began thousands of years before the novel begins. It was when the Sauron, the Dark Lord forged the One Ring with an intention to rule all the other Rings of Power and gain domination over the people of Middle Earth.

The One Ring was said to be made in pure Gold and was protected from all damage unless thrown into the volcanic pit of Mount Doom; for, this is where it was forged by Sauron originally. While the other rings were susceptible to dragon fire, the One ring was not. However, when it was put in fire, it displayed a Tengwar inscription of two lines written in the Black Speech; which was Saudor’s language and was used in his land Mordor. The inscription depicted the power this ring had on controlling all the other Rings of Power.

The wearer of the One Ring saw and bore its many affects and was therefore called ‘the Ring Bearer’. This ring made him/her invisible to Men but not to the Nazgul (Sauron’s Servants). It diminished the eyesight yet sharpened all other senses of the one who wore it. It gave and took over immense power on the wearer; slowly corrupting the individual. It was for this reason that it was decided to destroy the One Ring.

Rings Passage: From Dark Lord Sauron to Frodo

With an intention to be the most powerful person Sauron placed a lot of his own power in the One ring so that it could be stronger than the other eight rings. However, as a result, Sauron became dependent upon the One ring for his own existence; for as long as the ring existed he existed.

Soon, when a battle took place between Sauron and the Men and the Elves, Sauron was vanquished. He lost his physical form when the One Ring was cut off from his finger by Isildur who was the ruler of Men. Isildur took the ring as an heirloom. However, he was later killed by Orcs and the One Ring got lost only to be found 2000 years later by one of the river-folks called Déagol. But, the ring took its effect and Déagol’s friend Sméagol fell under its influence killing him to get the ring. When Sméagol was banished, he went to hide in the Misty Mountains where his lifespan got extended by the Ring and over the years he transformed into a horrendous, corrupted creature Gollum. But one day he lost the ring; to be found by Bilbo Baggins.

When Sauron re-acquired his form, he took over the land of Mordor and set Gollum free to search for Baggins and the ring, as he needed it to regain his powers. Gollum was helped by the Nazguls as well.

Meanwhile, the ring had been inherited by the Hobbit Frodo Baggins from his cousin and the ring’s guardian Bilbo Baggins. Frodo is advised by the Wizard Gandalf the Grey, to take the ring away from the Shire. Frodo does as he is advised. He is accompanied by his friend, Samwise Gamgee, and cousins, Merry and Pippin. Aiding them was Tom Bombadil, the only one who remained unaffected by the corrupting influence of the ring. In a town named Bree they come across Aragorn, Isildur’s heir. He helps them in their journey and attacks by the Nizgul. It is after one such near fatal attack that Frodo decides the ring needs to be destroyed and swears to return it to the volcanic flames of Mount Doom. In this daunting task he is aided by the newly formed – ‘Fellowship of the Ring’ with Aragon, Sam, Gandalf, Merry, Gimli the Dwarf, Pippin, Legolas the Elf, Gandalf, the Man Boromir, and son of the Ruling Steward Denethor of Gondor.

They come across many road blocks through their journey to Mount Doom and many of their companions are wounded or fall apart enroute. Sauron and his mentor, the wizard Saruman send Orcs to foil their attempts. They kill Boromir and kidnap Pippin and Merry. The Fellowship splits as Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas are forced to pursue the kidnappers. Now it is only Sam and Frodo on their journey to Mordor; while the others fight battles in pockets all over.

Frodo and Sam realize Gollum has been following them and capture him; forcing him to act as their guide into Sauron’s city. However, they must make a secret entry into Mordon as the gates are heavily guarded. While they are doing so through the tunnels of Cirith Ungol, Gollum, in his lust for the ring; betrays Frodo, leading him to the poisonous, spider Shelob. When Frodo is stung by her; Sam fights her off. But, thinking Frodo to be dead he leaves with the Ring; only to return when he learns Frodo was only unconscious.

The Destruction of the ring

On the other hand Sauron unleashes a deadly attack on the city of Gondor. As various events unfold most members of the Fellowship along with wizard Gandalf get involved in the battle. Aragorn accompanied by the Dúnedain Rangers, Legolas, and Gimli raises an un-dead army comprising of oath-breakers who were bound with an ancient curse. This army of ghosts then helps Aragorn in fighting the battle to protect Gondor.

Meanwhile, Frodo is rescued by Sam and they resume their journey across Mordor. To keep Sauron from knowing what is in store for him, Aragorn decides to lead the armies of Rohan and Gondor to attack on the Black Gate of Mordor. Although outnumbered they bravely Fight Sauron’s army.

Soon Frodo reaches the edge of the volcanic cracks of Mount Doom. However, since he had the ring for such a long time, its corrupting effect starts to take over and Frodo instead of throwing the ring decides to claim it for him. Just then Gollum the creature reappears and in his bid to claim the ring bites off Frodo’s finger together with the ring. As he is dancing with joy, he slips and falls into the volcanic fire; taking the supremely powerful One Ring with him. Thus, Frodo’s mission completes; the ring is destroyed and Sauron permanently loses his powers. Aragorn’s forces emerge as the winners as the Nazgul perish and Sauron’s army falls apart.
